Vasty is a resilient mother in Katete, Zambia, whose life was turned upside down when her house tragically burned down, leaving her family with nothing. In the face of that devastating loss, the wider community rallied together and rebuilt her a new home — but a house is not the same as a home that’s ready to live in. The fire had consumed everything the family owned, right down to their bedding, their mattresses, and their food supplies. For weeks after the rebuild, Vasty and her children were still sleeping on bare floors, with no proper bedding or mattresses to soften the ground beneath them, and without enough food in the house to keep them nourished at the exact moment they needed strength to recover.
The Process
The community’s effort to physically rebuild Vasty’s house was a genuine demonstration of unity — neighbors helping neighbors put up walls and a roof. But our team recognized that the job wasn’t finished: a rebuilt house without bedding, mattresses, or food still isn’t a place where a family can truly recover. Once Vasty’s story was fully funded, our team set out to complete what the community had started. We gathered bedding, mattresses, and food, and traveled out to Vasty’s newly rebuilt home to deliver everything in person, so that she and her children could finally have a comfortable place to sleep and enough to eat while they rebuilt their lives.
