Imagine the frustration of eager students unable to study after dark simply because of frequent power cuts. That was the harsh reality facing students in Katete, Zambia — unreliable electricity was hindering their ability to study at night, particularly as they prepared for crucial examinations. Power outages were common, leaving homes dark just as students most needed to be at their desks, and limiting how many hours a day they could actually dedicate to their studies. Our team’s answer was simple in concept but transformative in effect: solar-powered lights that could offer a reliable source of light regardless of what the grid was doing.
The students' story
The Process
The joy and excitement in the community was immediate once the project was fully funded — this wasn’t just about lighting homes, it was about illuminating futures.
The community celebrates the news
From there, our team purchased solar lights for the students of Katete and arranged for them to be transported to the community — but along the way, the bus company responsible for the shipment misplaced it entirely. Rather than stay quiet about the setback, our team kept the community updated every step of the way: first sharing the disappointing news that the lights had gone missing, and then following up as the bus company agreed to make things right, all while our team worked to recover the loss and get replacement lights delivered.

The Results
Months after that setback, the lights finally reached the students who had been waiting for them.
Students receive their solar lights
Today, roughly 45 students have solar lights illuminating their homes, and the results have been exactly what our team hoped for: parents report their children studying an additional two to three hours on a typical evening, teachers have noticed a real uptick in homework completion, and the students themselves describe feeling far more confident heading into exams — no longer racing the sunset just to finish a night’s worth of studying. What started as a simple gift of light has rippled outward into better grades, renewed motivation, and younger siblings now looking forward to the day they get to study by the same steady glow.
